EMERGENCY

Types of dental emergencies we treat

If it hurts, bleeds or has broken, call us. These are the cases we see most.

Toothache

Dreadful pain, especially when eating or drinking, often means infection or a deep cavity that needs treating now.

Chipped, cracked or fractured teeth

Even a small chip can expose the nerve. We smooth, rebuild or protect the tooth before it worsens.

Tissue injury

Cuts to the gums, lips, cheeks or tongue that keep bleeding need to be seen and cleaned properly.

Knocked out or loose teeth

Time matters most here. Keep the tooth moist, call us immediately, and come straight in.

Damaged restorations

A lost filling, crown or bridge leaves the tooth exposed. We refit or replace it and check what is underneath.

Other dental emergencies

Swelling, an abscess, something stuck between teeth, or pain you cannot explain. Call and we will advise.

WHEN TO CALL

Signs you need an emergency dentist

Some signs mean you should not wait for a routine appointment. If you notice any of these, contact a dentist in Calgary immediately.

  • Bleeding from the mouth without signs of stopping
  • Any bad taste or smell in the mouth
  • Dreadful pain, especially when eating or drinking
  • Teeth loosened, in adults
  • Any injury to the mouth or face
  • Hypersensitivity to hot or cold fluids

Severe swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency. Go to your nearest emergency department or call 911 rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Emergency questions, answered

Do you see emergency patients on the same day?

We do our best to. Emergencies cannot wait, so as soon as you contact us we try to fit you into the schedule without longer wait times or delays. Call (403) 286-2622 as early in the day as you can, because that gives us the most options.

I am not a patient at Maxwell Dental. Can you still see me?

Yes. New patients are always welcome, including in an emergency. Choose New Patient on the form and we will take it from there.

What should I do with a knocked out tooth?

Handle it by the crown rather than the root, keep it moist in milk or saliva, and call us immediately. Time matters a great deal with a knocked out tooth, so phone us on your way rather than waiting.

How much will my emergency visit cost?

It depends on what the tooth needs, which we cannot know until we have looked. What we can promise is that you will hear the number and your insurance portion before any treatment begins.

Do you accept insurance and the CDCP?

We bill most major Canadian plans directly, and we accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan. If you are enrolled in the CDCP it is time to renew your coverage, and the program now extends to qualifying adults aged 18 to 65.

Can you help with dental anxiety during an emergency?

Yes. Emergencies are stressful enough without adding dental fear. Tell us when you call and we will take it slowly, explain each step before it happens, and discuss the comfort options available to you.

Where are you and is there parking?

We are at 4935 40 Ave NW #234, Calgary, AB T3A 2N1, with parking on site, a short drive from Varsity Estates, Silver Springs, Bowness, Brentwood and Greenwood.
